Hi, I am Dr. Maura McGill, I am an expert in natural hormone treatments. Today I want to answer your questions about when menopause happens. Is it perimenopause, I am asked and what is Perimenopause?
The definition of menopause is twelve months after your last period. The definition of perimenopause is from the first day that you start having the symptoms of menopause, like hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain and all of the process that is known to be menopausal. At that point of perimenopause, you could still be having periods but you are approaching menopause.
Your levels of hormone are going down. It is process, not a date. So at what stage should you expect it? Average people get it between 40 and 55 but there are no guidelines related to actual dates. The average in Australia is said to be 51-52, the average world-wide is about the same. But it can be anywhere from 28-60. So don’t panic about menopause. This is not the end of being a real woman. This is not the end of being sexy, but it is freedom from periods and freedom from birth control.
